The four Socionics quadras

Have you ever walked into a group and felt instantly at home, as if everyone was already speaking your language? And walked into another, full of perfectly nice people, and felt like a visitor? Socionics explains part of that with quadras: four groups of four types who share the same values.

What a quadra is

Each type values four of the eight functions: the two it leads with, and the two it needs from others. Types that value the same four functions form a quadra. There are four quadras, named after the first four letters of the Greek alphabet: Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta.

Within a quadra, people care about the same kinds of things, even when they're very different people. They find the same conversations interesting, the same atmospheres comfortable and the same behaviour annoying. Both duality pairs in a quadra live inside it, which is why each quadra has a recognisable "feel".

Alpha: ideas, comfort and good company

Alpha types: the Inventor (ILE), the Mediator (SEI), the Enthusiast (ESE) and the Analyst (LII).

In the app's words, Alpha values intellectual exploration, comfort and positive emotions. Alpha types seek to understand the world through ideas while creating warm, harmonious environments.

An Alpha evening is relaxed and talkative: good food, curious conversation, jokes, and nobody competing for status. Alphas tend to be open to anyone with an interesting mind, and wary of hierarchy, pressure and power games.

Beta: passion, loyalty and a cause

Beta types: the Actor (EIE), the Inspector (LSI), the Conqueror (SLE) and the Lyricist (IEI).

The app describes Beta as valuing decisive action, emotional intensity and strong group bonds. Beta types are drawn to drama, power and transformative experiences.

Beta groups feel like a team or a movement. There's a sense of mission, clear roles and strong loyalty to the group. Emotions run high and are shared openly. Betas respect strength and commitment, and have little patience for indifference.

Gamma: results, independence and deep bonds

Gamma types: the Politician (SEE), the Critic (ILI), the Entrepreneur (LIE) and the Guardian (ESI).

The app describes Gamma as valuing personal achievement, pragmatic results and deep personal bonds. Gamma types are driven, independent and focused on tangible success.

Gamma conversations are candid and practical: what works, who can be trusted, where things are heading. Gammas keep small, chosen circles and invest in them for the long term. They value honesty over politeness and have little time for empty promises.

Delta: craft, authenticity and quiet harmony

Delta types: the Administrator (LSE), the Empath (EII), the Inspirer (IEE) and the Craftsman (SLI).

The app describes Delta as valuing practical competence, individual growth and genuine human connection. Delta types appreciate craftsmanship, authenticity and quiet harmony.

A Delta home is comfortable, well kept and sincere. Deltas care about doing things properly, about personal development and about treating people decently. They give each other space and dislike pomp, status games and forced enthusiasm.

How each quadra talks

You can often hear a quadra before you can name it.

Alpha conversations jump between ideas and jokes, and they're happiest when nobody is trying to win. Beta conversations have weight and direction: opinions, causes, who's with us. Gamma conversations are candid and future-focused: what's really going on, what's worth doing, who you can count on. Delta conversations are sincere and practical: how things could be done better, how someone is really doing, what's worth learning next.

None of these is better. They're simply different ideas of what a good conversation is, and they explain why the same evening can feel wonderful to one person and pointless to another.

Quadras at work

Quadras show up in workplaces too. An Alpha team values open discussion and a pleasant atmosphere, and may struggle with hard deadlines. A Beta team values clear hierarchy and shared mission, and may struggle with ambiguity. A Gamma team values results and independence, and may struggle with team spirit. A Delta team values quality and personal development, and may struggle with bold, high-risk moves.

When a team keeps stalling for reasons nobody can name, a quadra mismatch between the people and the culture is often part of the answer.

Finding your quadra

If you know your type, your quadra follows directly: check the type pages, which group all 16 by quadra. If you're unsure of your type, the quadra descriptions can actually help. Ask yourself which of the four atmospheres you'd most like to live in, and which you'd quietly leave early. Many people find their quadra easier to recognise than their exact type.

Why quadras matter for relationships

Your quadra explains why some friendships feel effortless even when the two of you aren't a famous match. When you share values, you don't have to explain why something matters to you.

Every type has three quadra-mates: their dual (the relationship that feels like rest), their activator (the relationship that feels like coffee), and their mirror (the relationship that feels like a debate you enjoy). These three are usually the easiest relationships for any type, and they're all inside the same quadra.

Relationships across quadras aren't doomed. Many strong partnerships cross quadra lines. They simply require more translation, because you're coming at life with different priorities.

A note on stereotypes

Quadra descriptions are tendencies, not uniforms. Not every Beta loves drama, and not every Delta is calm. Use your quadra as a clue to what matters to you and to the people you click with, not as a box.

Questions about this lesson

What are the four Socionics quadras?
Alpha (ILE, SEI, ESE, LII), Beta (EIE, LSI, SLE, IEI), Gamma (SEE, ILI, LIE, ESI) and Delta (LSE, EII, IEE, SLI).
What does a quadra mean in Socionics?
A quadra is a group of four types who value the same four functions, so they tend to share values, humour and preferred atmospheres.
Is my dual in my quadra?
Yes. Your dual, your activator and your mirror are all in your quadra.
Can people from different quadras have good relationships?
Yes. Cross-quadra relationships can be close and lasting. They usually need more explaining, because each person's priorities are different.
